Nancy Cast, TPSF co-founder, had a vision of an organization that would support all Tustin Unified students. Without her, the Tustin Public Schools Foundation (TPSF) would not exist. In memory of nancy cast

Nancy Cast, a former member of the Tustin Unified School District Board of Education and founding president of the Tustin Public Schools Foundation, passed away on Friday, August 4, after a long illness. Her husband Jim, a retired chiropractor, died just eight days later, also after a long illness.

Mrs. Cast served on the Tustin school board in 1993-94.  She was appointed to the Board in November 1993 to replace Sally Burrage, who resigned and moved out of the area.   Mrs. Cast completed her one-year term in December 1994.

Nancy Cast, along with her friend Linda Jennings, co-founded the Tustin Public Schools Foundation in 1989.  They began to mobilize the community to fund raise, develop programs and create funding for enrichment opportunities for all students in TUSD.  “All the money in the world cannot replace what good teachers bring to the classroom,” said Nancy Cast, one of the sixteen founding members of the Tustin Public Schools Foundation.   She served as TPSF President from 1988 to 1992.

Additionally, many years ago, Mrs. Cast was president of the Arroyo Elementary School and Hewes Middle School PTOs and TUSD’s Coordinating Council, a group comprised of PTA/PTO presidents from schools throughout the District.   She was also a founder and president of the Learning, Enrichment and Achievement Partners (LEAP), a Tustin-based after-school and summer academic intervention program for students.  In 1991, Mrs. Cast was chosen as the American Association of University Women’s Woman of Distinction.

Mrs. Cast is survived by her sons, Jim, Jason and Joshua; daughters, Crystal and Laurie; and several grandchildren.  All of them attended TUSD schools and graduated from Foothill High School.  Many of the grandchildren attend schools in the District.

A memorial service for both Jim and Nancy Cast will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 18, at Saddleback Chapel Mortuary, 220 E. Main Street in Tustin.  Immediately following the service, there will be a reception at the Hewes House in Tustin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Tustin Public Schools Foundation, 150 El Camino Real, Ste. 140, Tustin, CA 92780 (www.tpsf.net); or LEAP Learning Center, 1221 Wass St., Tustin, CA 92780.

Our hearts and thoughts go out to her family.
