Go Green Tustin!

Tustin Unified schools are working together to lessen their impact on the environment and to teach students and families about conservation and environmental issues.

Incentive funds of $1,000 are available to any Tustin Unified school to establish or support a school "Green Committee."  These committees will create educational programs to further green activities in their schools.  Ready to get started? Go to our Quick Start Guide.

The Go Green Tustin Initiative, funded by grants from the Boeing Employees Community Fund and the Orange County Community Foundation, was piloted at Ladera Elementary School, Columbus Tustin Middle School and Beckman High School to provide incentives and encouragement to help schools reduce waste and educate students about conservation.  This new funding will allow the program to expand to all Tustin Unified schools in the fall.  Parents at participating schools are organizing Green Teams to help their schools work to reduce, reuse and recycle waste at school and at home.

During the pilot phase of the program, Southern California Edison funded “Living Wise” kits for all 6th grade students at Columbus Tustin and other TUSD middle schools. Ladera Elementary School saved water (3900 gallons), energy (2300 kwh), air emissions (33 pounds) and oil (over 200 gallons) during just one month of their recycling efforts, and at Beckman High School, students carried around their trash for a week to demonstrate the amount of waste produced by one student.

“We are inspired by the creativity and dedication of the Go Green students and volunteers,” stated Julie Hirz, president of the Tustin Public Schools Foundation.  “By partnering with the community, our Foundation is able to provide resources to help students apply math and science in the real world, and to make their learning come alive. We are grateful to the Orange County Community Foundation and our other partners for their support.”
